The Pitfalls of Anti-Anxiety Medication!

I had my first anxiety attack about 12 years ago when I was in high school. At the time, I had no idea what it was and I thought for sure that I was dying. After a quick trip to the emergency room and two “magic pills”, I came to my senses and soaked in all the doctor had to tell me. I hadn’t even heard of an anxiety attack before then, and I definitely didn’t want to go through that again. The ER doctor mentioned that I may have to go on medication if the problem persists, but luckily I made through the rest of high school without anymore problems.

Then came college life

with it stresses, lack of sleep, and unhealthy habits…within a month I had my second anxiety attack. It had been so long since the first one that I didn’t recognize it at first, and by the time I realized what was going on, it was too late. Another trip to the emergency room followed, a couple more “magic pills”, and all was fine once again. This time I was referred to one of the campus doctors for a follow up. This turned out to be one of the biggest mistakes that I made during my college life, and I made a lot of them!

The doctor’s first reaction before doing any kind of tests was to

I ask about those “magic pills” they gave me in the hospital, but he wasn’t going for that. So I walked out with a prescription in hand for Paxil with very little explanation from him on how it would all work.

I didn’t fill the prescription at first. I wasn’t to keen on having to take a pill everyday when I woke up in the morning. But one anxiety attack later, I marched my butt into the pharmacy and picked up my first bottle of Paxil. And so it

began, the reason why I am sitting here today writing this article.

Nothing really came of it at first, but that was expected. But after about a month, I felt noticeably different and friends were commenting that I lacked the kind of emotion that I once had. I didn’t get excited about anything anymore, it was almost like I didn’t care. But the real kicker was yet to come, and it really caught me by surprise. Let’s just say it was hard being in the midst of my college “career” and having absolutely no sex drive. That’s something that I didn’t handle very well.

I had made the decision about six months later that the

Paxil had to go. So I took it upon myself to stop taking it and just deal with the anxiety attacks in my own way. That was the beginning of my week in hell! And it had nothing to do with the anxiety attacks. The withdrawals from the Paxil were excruciating. It was like nothing that I had ever felt before. I started out being noticeably agitated but the quickly became the least of my problems. That was when the “shocks” set in a couple of days later. Every part of my body felt electrified and not in a good way. These painful “shocks’ ran through my body every time I

moved. The only relief I had was to lay completely still with my eyes closed for very long periods of time. I had hoped that if I could make it through a couple of days of this it would go away. Not even close! It just got worse and worse. I came to the realization that the only way to make them go away was to start taking the Paxil again. At that point, I was so miserable that I knew that I had no other choice.

So I went through the rest of college with my bottle of Paxil in hand, very bitter about the fact that the doctor never mentioned to me

once that I would become “addicted” to this medication. I stuck with it though, because I couldn’t handle the thought of going through the withdrawals again. As time went by, I came to realize something else about Paxil. My body was building up a tolerance to it and after a while I would start feeling the “shocks” even though I hadn’t stopped taking it. This was apparently a sign that I needed to have my dosage increased.

That is how it went for 8 years! The first thing I would think about every time I took a trip was “Do I have my Paxil”, I felt like a slave to it. Believe or not,

there is a happy ending to this story. And ironically, it started at the doctor’s office, but it had nothing to do with the doctor. I met a lady in the waiting room and I started talking to her (that’s what I do when I get nervous, and the doctor’s office makes me nervous). She was there because she was getting “weened” off her Paxil, which she had been taking almost as long I as was. She explained that she had found a program that taught her a natural way to handle her anxiety, and now she was well on her way to being Paxil-free. Needless to say, I was very jealous, I found out
